EFLA Consulting Engineers participate in ArcticSewlutions, an international research and development project focused on improving wastewater treatment in cold climates and sparsely populated areas. The project is funded by the European Union's Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) programme, which supports collaboration across remote and northern regions on shared challenges.
Project goals and EFLA's role
ArcticSewlutions aims to gather knowledge on various wastewater treatment solutions currently used in Arctic countries and evaluate their effectiveness in removing pollutants. The project also aims to evaluate the environmental impact of wastewater discharge and assess how treatment performance varies under different conditions. The results will support municipalities and plant operators in making informed decisions about treatment solutions that best suit their environmental and infrastructural context.
EFLA is the Icelandic project partner and acts as the national liaison. The company will coordinate sampling from selected treatment plants in Iceland and assess the effectiveness of these systems in removing contaminants. The findings will help determine the impact of wastewater discharge on nearby aquatic environments.
Knowledge exchange and site visits in Iceland
EFLA will co-organize a workshop in Iceland, focusing on wastewater treatment in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, as part of the project. Partners from several countries will share experiences, solutions, and innovations tailored to northern environments. The workshop will include site visits to wastewater treatment facilities in Iceland, showcasing a range of technical approaches in real-world conditions.
With its data-driven approach and focus on nature-based solutions, ArcticSewlutions can inform national and international policymaking, contributing to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable use of water resources.
