In 2024, EFLA Kevan Shaw Lighting Design (KSLD) solidified its position as a leader in architectural lighting design, delivering innovative, sustainable, and human-centric solutions that elevate functionality and artistic expression. Based in Edinburgh, the team exemplifies EFLA's overarching commitment to enhancing quality of life through thoughtful design and environmental stewardship.
Transformative Projects
One standout project showcased EFLA KSLD's dedication to societal impact by designing a dynamic lighting system for an office supporting women affected by violence, abuse, and exploitation. The adaptive lighting environment addressed the diverse needs of users, creating a comforting and functional space that promotes well-being and healing.
At Edinburgh University, the team addressed inefficiencies in outdated lighting schemes. Their interventions reduced energy consumption and minimised sky pollution, aligning with EFLA's commitment to sustainability while enhancing the functional and aesthetic quality of the university's spaces.
Award-Winning Design
The re-illumination of the King's Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, nominated for a Build Back Better Award 2024 in the lighting category, exemplifies EFLA KSLD's expertise in circular economy principles and advanced lighting technology.
Initially designed in 2002, the gallery's re-design embraced modern LED technology while retaining and adapting much of the original lighting system, including the grand chandelier, wall lights, and step lights.
The reception area received a significant upgrade, featuring backlit panels with colour-tunable LEDs that mimic natural daylight transitions—cool and bright during the day and warm for evening events. A state-of-the-art DALI-based control system, enhanced with Casambi Technologies wireless controls, streamlined the operation for staff, proving a practical yet innovative solution where additional cabling was not feasible.
Vision for the Future
EFLA KSLD's work exemplifies how lighting design can transform spaces, foster well-being, and support environmental sustainability. "Our focus has always been on designing lighting solutions that meet practical requirements and inspire and support the communities we serve," says Sara Tobalina del Val, Associate Director at EFLA KSLD.
Looking ahead, EFLA KSLD remains steadfast in its mission to redefine lighting design through collaboration, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology.
