The project's objective

The project scope was to renovate an existing foot- and cycling path alongside the Ring 3 highway in Oslo (between Holmenveien and Gaustad). A separate, eastbound bus lane was added to the highway parallel to the renovation.

The project is a part of a larger initiative to implement a continuous net of cycling paths in Oslo, an undertaking initiated by the city authorities in 1999. The new bus lane is installed to improve the flow of public transport.

EFLA designed new foot- and cycle paths, two new footbridges and other adjoining structures in the area. Furthermore, EFLA provided the design of the bus lane, bus stops, street lighting, cabling and electrical installations, drainage system and carried out environmental field studies.

Key figures

  • A new foot- and cycling path, 1 km in length, alongside the Ring 3 highway. New retaining walls/sound barriers running in parallel are 500 meters long.
  • The footbridge at Ris skole is a 90 m long cable stayed bridge over four spans. The bridge has a steel box cross section, 4,3 m wide, and the longest span is 45 m long, crossing the Ring 3 highway. The bridge design is a collaboration between EFLA and Studio Granda architects.
  • The footbridge at Borgenveien is a concrete slab bridge in a single 15 m span, total width 6,5 m.

Environmental issues

EFLA conducted environmental field studies and provided a protocol for the handling of contaminated minerals.

EFLA also evaluated and analysed traffic noise in the area and designed sound barriers.
