A cooperation
agreement
signed

Today, a formal cooperation agreement was signed between EFLA, Bremenport, Langanes municipality and Vopnafjörður municipality, confirming the decision to work together on assessing the feasibility of an international transshipment and service port in Finnafjörður and the benefits for surrounding regions and municipalities. Present at the signing were Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson and Minister of Industry and Commerce Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir.

The agreement stipulates the rights and obligations of the parties in the research and evaluation of legal, technical, environmental and financial aspects of the project. By the agreement, a plan is in place on the research that needs to be undertaken in the coming years. The total cost of research, environmental assessment and preliminary design is estimated to amount to ISK several hundred million. Bremenports will provide funding for these projects.

During the current year, the main focus will be on the gathering of data for the environmental assessment and preliminary design and the layout of the port. One will start to examine the flora and birdlife in a very wide area in and around Finnafjörður. Geotechnical studies will be carried out and weather stations will be installed in the area as well as measurement buoys. Accurate surveying and cartography work will also be carried out. In 2015, ecosystem research will continue as well as archaeological research. The biosphere of the coast and the fjord will also be studied. The preliminary design of the port will begin as well as the initial survey of the inner layout of the port area. It is likely that a formal EIA process could begin in 2016 and it can be expected to take 2 years in all. Construction in Finnafjörður hence could start in 2018 at the earliest. In the coming months, consultations will take place between the government and the developers of Finnafjörður port on the necessary infrastructure in Finnafjörður, such as electricity supply and road construction.
